A new study has linked prescription drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) with a surprising side effect: a heart condition known as a heart attack.
The findings, published in the journal Circulation, suggest that a combination of a low dose of sildenafil (Viagra), a generic drug approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), with nitric oxide donors, such as amyl nitrite, nitric oxide donors, such as isosorbide dinitrate, and nitric oxide donors, such as guanosine triphosphate (GDP) can cause a heart attack.
Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, is the only ED drug that has been shown to cause a heart attack in more than 90 percent of people. Other heart-related side effects include a headache, dizziness, and fatigue.
The researchers used the data from the trial to compare the effects of sildenafil (Viagra) with those of nitrates and guanylate cyclase (GC) inhibitors such as riociguat, used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).
They found that the heart condition was more likely to cause a heart attack in people with PAH, and that people with PAH who used sildenafil (Viagra) had a higher incidence of a heart attack.
The results, published in the journal Circulation, were published online Monday in the journal of the American Heart Association.
"As we know, the heart attacks occur in a majority of people with heart disease, and this is why sildenafil, a generic drug to treat erectile dysfunction, is the only ED drug that has been shown to cause a heart attack," said lead author Dr. Irwin Goldstein, a urologist at Irwin Goldstein Medical Center in San Diego.
He said that while the heart attack risk in people with PAH was higher than that in people with ED, that may be because of the medication's ability to stimulate the blood vessels in the heart, which can worsen the condition.
The researchers are using the data to compare the effects of sildenafil (Viagra) with those of nitrates and guanylate cyclase (GC) inhibitors, which work by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, like nitric oxide (NO) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP).
Nitric oxide is an that the body uses to make nitric oxide. cGMP, a compound found in blood vessels of the penis, relaxes the blood vessels in the penis.
The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health. A U. government grant has been provided to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

Dr. Goldstein and co-authors were based in San Diego and lead author on the paper, Jonathan D. M. Alpert, M. D., a professor of urology at Harvard Medical School, said that the study is the first to compare the side effects of sildenafil (Viagra) with those of nitrates and guanylate cyclase (GC) inhibitors.
"Sildenafil has been known to cause a heart attack in some patients with PAH and this is a very common side effect," said Alpert. "We have to be cautious about the use of this medication in people with cardiovascular disease."
Viagra is also known to cause a heart attack in some patients with PAH. Viagra has been shown to cause a heart attack in people with PAH. In the new study, men who took Viagra (a generic of sildenafil) had a higher incidence of a heart attack than men who took nitrates or nitric oxide donors.
Sildenafil (Viagra) is approved by the FDA and is available as a generic. The study's authors compared Viagra to that of the other generic and found that the latter was more likely to cause a heart attack.
"Viagra was associated with a higher incidence of a heart attack in men who took the drug," Goldstein said. "That is consistent with the results of a small number of men using sildenafil."
Viagra was also associated with a higher incidence of a heart attack in men who took the drug.
The study was published online in Circulation.
