A new study has linked prescription drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) with a surprising side effect: a heart condition known as a heart attack.

They found that the heart condition was more likely to cause a heart attack in people with PAH, and that people with PAH who used sildenafil (Viagra) had a higher incidence of a heart attack.

"As we know, the heart attacks occur in a majority of people with heart disease, and this is why sildenafil, a generic drug to treat erectile dysfunction, is the only ED drug that has been shown to cause a heart attack," said lead author Dr. Irwin Goldstein, a urologist at Irwin Goldstein Medical Center in San Diego.
He said that while the heart attack risk in people with PAH was higher than that in people with ED, that may be because of the medication's ability to stimulate the blood vessels in the heart, which can worsen the condition.
